With Brunell Signing, Who Is Odd Man Out?

The New York Jets, in a surprise move, signed Mark Brunell, the ageless wonder, to a two year contract Tuesday.

Obviously I was a little sarcastic with the surprise move as the New York Jets have been eyeing this move just like a QB stares down a receiver and then gets burned or picked off.  Hopefully the Jets in making this move do not get “Intercepted”.

I’ve seen all type of reactions to the New York Jets signing Brunell, with his age as the major concern.  I believe that there were better options for a backup to young Mark Sanchez [@Mark_Sanchez], BUT make no mistake, Brunell is an upgrade to Kellen Clemens.

Clemens Appears to be the Odd Man Out

Clemens was given the reigns as a starter and did nothing but squander his chance.  To be fair to Clemens, he didn’t have the team around him that the Sanchize did, but there was enough talent to succeed.  Brett Favre did ok the season after… oh, wait.  It was Brett Favre and that’s not fair either.  The guy could win in the NFL with a High School team.  Ok maybe not, but it looks like Clemens is the odd man out.

If we look at the other QB options, Erik Ainge [@ErikAinge3], Kevin O’Connell, and we could even throw in Brad Smith, I don’t believe any of these players could be a number 2.  Unfortunately, Ainge and/or O’Connell will be gone before or during camp.

There is no way the Jets will carry 4 1/2 QBs.  I say 1/2 because Smith can play multiple positions and he can be an emergency QB if needed.

Speaking of Erik Ainge, he usually is very active on Twitter, but it’s been 2 weeks since he tweeted.  Is he studying?  Is he laying low for a reason?  Did someone tell him to stop the tweeting and hit the books because he is on the bubble?  Who knows the real reason, but he was a good guy on Twitter.  I hope he comes back, but first, I hope he makes the team because he has the skill.

My Prediction on QB Depth

  1. Mark Sanchez
  2. Mark Brunell
  3. Erik Ainge

Kevin O’Connell – CUT

Kellen Clemens – CUT / TRADE

What do you think?  Do you like the Brunell signing?  Who do you think is the odd man out?
