The New York Jets, in a surprise move, signed Mark Brunell, the ageless wonder, to a two year contract Tuesday.
Adam_Schefter The New York Jets signed veteran QB Mark Brunell to a two-year deal. More at ESPN.com
Obviously I was a little sarcastic with the surprise move as the New York Jets have been eyeing this move just like a QB stares down a receiver and then gets burned or picked off. Â Hopefully the Jets in making this move do not get “Intercepted”.
Burton/AP
I’ve seen all type of reactions to the New York Jets signing Brunell, with his age as the major concern. Â I believe that there were better options for a backup to young Mark Sanchez [@Mark_Sanchez], BUT make no mistake, Brunell is an upgrade to Kellen Clemens.
Clemens Appears to be the Odd Man Out
Clemens was given the reigns as a starter and did nothing but squander his chance. Â To be fair to Clemens, he didn’t have the team around him that the Sanchize did, but there was enough talent to succeed. Â Brett Favre did ok the season after… oh, wait. Â It was Brett Favre and that’s not fair either. Â The guy could win in the NFL with a High School team. Â Ok maybe not, but it looks like Clemens is the odd man out.
If we look at the other QB options, Erik Ainge [@ErikAinge3], Kevin O’Connell, and we could even throw in Brad Smith, I don’t believe any of these players could be a number 2. Â Unfortunately, Ainge and/or O’Connell will be gone before or during camp.
There is no way the Jets will carry 4 1/2 QBs. Â I say 1/2 because Smith can play multiple positions and he can be an emergency QB if needed.
Speaking of Erik Ainge, he usually is very active on Twitter, but it’s been 2 weeks since he tweeted. Â Is he studying? Â Is he laying low for a reason? Â Did someone tell him to stop the tweeting and hit the books because he is on the bubble? Â Who knows the real reason, but he was a good guy on Twitter. Â I hope he comes back, but first, I hope he makes the team because he has the skill.
One of Erik’s Last Tweets:
ErikAinge3 @TimRyan83 @ogochocinco Respect man. As a fellow Oregonian, he can rock it.
My Prediction on QB Depth
- Mark Sanchez
- Mark Brunell
- Erik Ainge
Kevin O’Connell – CUT
Kellen Clemens – CUT / TRADE
What do you think? Â Do you like the Brunell signing? Â Who do you think is the odd man out?
