Laveranues Coles – Third Times The Charm

(Sipkin/News) Laveranues Coles (r.) told a New Jersey newspaper he's interested in returning to the New York Jets for a third time.

Well it appears that former New York Jets WR Laveranues Coles is looking to rejoin the team. Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are indeed interested in re-signing their former starter.

With well publicized holes in the receiving corps, the Jets haven’t ruled out re-signing Coles for a third stint with the team.

This might not be such a bad idea for the Jets. Sure there may be better options out there, but Coles brings with him experience and familiarity.

Coles, who had a bit of a tiff over Chad Pennington’s trade to the Dolphins last season, is someone who can help mentor not just the younger WR’s on the team but our young, super star QB as well.

The Jets are looking for a third or fourth receiver to play behind starters Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards (restricted free agent). This would seem to be the perfect spot for a Coles, who is no longer a number one guy.

The Jets have Brad Smith (RFA) and David Clowney, but neither is  a true No. 3 receiver.

Coles was cut by the Jets last February, agreeing to forfeit $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. The Jets tried to re-sign him for less money, but the Bengals out-bid them.

Coles, 32, was released last week after one season with the Bengals, and wasted no time advocating an interested in returning to the Jets.

I’d look for the Jets to take their time making a decision on Coles. Unless Coles agrees to a 1 year contract favorable to the team before then, expect the Jets to wait until after the coming draft next month.

Coles played with the Jets from 2000-02 and 2005-08, and is coming off his least productive season since his rookie year. He caught only 43 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns, confirming opinions that he lost a step. Coles believes he was a bad fit in the Bengals’ offense and still is capable of being productive for a few more years.

The Jets might just take him up on that.
