Jets Tender Contract Offers to 8 of 11 Restricted Free Agents

The official NY Jets Twitter account via Eric Allen sent out a couple of tweets regarding the players that are Free Agents.

EA: … announced today that they will tender contract offers to 8 of their 11 RFAs…

EA: W. Wright, LB M. Murrell and DT H. Green all had their contracts expire, were not tendered  and will become FAs at midnight.

EA: W. Wright, LB M. Murrell and DT H. Green all had their contracts expire, were not tendered by the Jets, and will become FAs at midnight.

EA: … placed second-round tenders on RB L. Washington and WR B. Smith.

Here is the official list:

  • Braylon Edwards (first and third)
  • Leon Washington (second)
  • Eric Smith (third)
  • Wayne Hunter (third)
  • James Ihedigbo (right of first refusal)
  • Brad Smith (second)
  • Drew Coleman (sixth)
  • Kellen Clemens (second)

The following players weren’t tendered -

  • Marques Murrell
  • Howard Green
  • Wallace Wright

The only thing that surprises me is the fact that they didn’t tender Wallace Wright, so he’s most likely gone this year.  It is going to be very interesting on who stays and who goes from this list.  Because the Jets advanced so far like they did in the playoffs they are now subject to the FINAL EIGHT rule that prevents them from spending as they normally would in previous years.  This was only put it because of the uncapped year.

Cimini had some quotes from Rex on the matter on not being able to spend:

“I think it’s a penalty for sure,” Rex Ryan said last weekend at the scouting combine. “Maybe you need a tight end or whatever it is, and you don’t have that ability to go out and get some of the top guys that might be available.

Ryan might consider the new rules a penalty, but they also could be a blessing. Under the old system, Washington, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Brad Smith and QB Kellen Clemens would’ve been unrestricted – and it would’ve been virtually impossible to keep them all. This way, they can retain them for at least one more season.
