Jets’ Edwards relieved legal issues behind him
New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards returned to practice Wednesday after missing a day to make a court appearance in Cleveland. Edwards was placed on probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct Tuesday. He said he was upset about having to miss practice, especially with the Jets preparing for their playoff game at San Diego on Sunday. “Finally that situation’s behind me, so I’m able to forget about it,” he said. “I’m able to fully step out of Cleveland and do everything I can as a Jet. I’m happy I can relax and just play football.”
Jets OC Schottenheimer turns down Bills’ request to interview for coach
New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer reportedly has turned down the Buffalo Bills’ request to interview him for their vacant head coaching job. A sports news website, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that Schottenheimer has told the Bills he does not want to talk to them about the position this week, or after the Jets’ playoff run is over. New York plays at San Diego on Sunday in the AFC divisional round.
Colts think tougher practices have them ready, not rusty, to face Ravens
The Indianapolis Colts felt like they spent last week at boot camp. Four-time MVP Peyton Manning tested himself against his own defense, the tempo was quick and the intensity increased. To first-year coach Jim Caldwell, this is how you use a bye week to get ready – not rusty – for the playoffs. “It really got the competitive juices flowing,” defensive end Dwight Freeney said. “The only difference between a game and a hard practice for the defense is the finishing of a tackle. We are going full speed. We are running and we are fighting.”
Jets RB Jones doesn’t practice, will play
New York Jets running back Thomas Jones did not practice, but is expected to play at San Diego in the AFC divisional round playoff game. Coach Rex Ryan said Jones was held out of practice Wednesday, as he has for the past few weeks, to give the NFL’s third-leading rusher a break. Fullback Tony Richardson(notes) was also given the day off. Ryan said Jones was listed on the injury report with a knee injury, but added he could’ve practiced fully. Ryan said Jones has a bruised knee and there are “no problems at all with him.”
Jets rookie RB has been big Greene Machine lately
Shonn Greene still thinks about the days when he was lifting couches instead of carrying footballs. “It wasn’t fun,” the New York Jets rookie running back said. “It was a humbling experience.” Greene’s football career was halted in 2007 when he was ruled academically ineligible at the University of Iowa. He paid for courses at a community college to get his grades up by working at a furniture store. “It’s crazy,” Greene said with a smile. “Back then, I never would’ve thought all this would come out of it. I stayed dedicated, worked hard and this is what it’s all about.”
Johnson dashes off as AP Offensive Player of Year
Chris Johnson’s goals just keep growing bigger. The Tennessee running back set the NFL record for yards from scrimmage while becoming the league’s first 2,000-500 player in yards rushing and receiving in his second season. He also grabbed a handful of franchise records away from Hall of Famer Earl Campbell. So what to do for an encore? Try this: CJ2K, the sequel. And yes, the man who celebrated a touchdown banging on drums he found in the end zone wants it bigger and better than before.
