Rex Ryan is perturbed that Darrelle Revis isn’t your DPOY

Charles Woodson is your NFL Defensive Player of the Year, which means that Darrelle Revis is not your NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and you wouldn’t have guessed it, but New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has an opinion on this. Regardless of your thoughts on Revis vs. Woodson, let’s all just take a moment and be thankful that there’s at least one coach in the NFL who doesn’t hold back. It would’ve been easy to just congratulate Woodson, not make any waves, and move on, but bless his heart, Rex Ryan came out swinging.

Injured Jets RB Washington ahead of rehab sked

Leon Washington(notes) expects to be on the field when the New York Jets play their first game next season. The optimistic running back said Tuesday that doctors have told him his broken right leg is two months ahead of a normal recovery, and he expects to be off crutches next week. “Everything’s looking on the up and up, and I’m just looking forward to when I can start jogging,” Washington said. “I’ve got a long way until the season starts. I’m on pace to be there for the opening game of the season, so I just try not to push myself too much.”

Jets’ rookie QB Sanchez already in rare territory

Mark Sanchez had the play called and was prepared for what Cincinnati’s defense was showing. Then came the whistle. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan had called a timeout, and the frustrated rookie quarterback trudged over to the sideline. “I was like, ‘Man, why the heck did you do that?”’ Sanchez recalled Tuesday. Ryan, it turns out, wanted to change the personnel and the play in the 24-14 victory over the Bengals last Saturday. “We converted anyway, so it didn’t matter,” Sanchez said. “But, it was just one of those situations where I felt so good and so comfortable. Then, we stopped everything.”

Back in NFL, Carroll already starting as coach, executive VP for Seahawks

Pete Carroll pumped his fist. He talked excitedly and forcefully. He chopped the air with his hands, commanding his new audience. Even though he had stepped back up into the NFL, he was still in charge – which is exactly why he’s in Seattle now instead of Southern California. The charismatic Carroll took over as the new coach and executive vice-president of the Seahawks on Tuesday, enthusiastically seizing an authority that he says mirrors the latitude USC gave him to restore its dynasty.

No time for Ravens’ Lewis to rejoice

Ray Lewis was in full postgame sartorial splendor: a three-piece, multi-color, multi-pattern, multi-fabric suit with a fedora that matched the jacket, of course. Mere mortals can’t pull off such an outfit. Lewis somehow made it look professorial, a man in full. He’d just delivered four solo tackles, nine assists and a sack in the Baltimore Ravens’ 33-14 humbling of the New England Patriots here. He was again and forever the centerpiece of the Ravens’ demolition defense, a seeming rite of January in the NFL. Playoffs come, playoffs go and Ray Lewis hits someone. He would waste little time afterward reflecting, let alone rejoicing, in his eighth postseason triumph though.
