Jets face big challenges from Chargers

The New York Jets face a tall order in devising a plan to defend San Diego’s big receivers. Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd are all at least 6-foot-4, and the Jets have one defensive back— safety Kerry Rhodes—taller than 6-1. “It’s like playing a basketball team with the guys they’ve got out there,” the 6-3 Rhodes said Monday. “They’ve got guys that are going to get after it.”

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis apologizes for failing to get playoff win

Coach Marvin Lewis apologized for failing to get the Cincinnati Bengals a playoff win. The Bengals have gone 19 years without a playoff victory, dropping their latest chance on Saturday. A 24-14 loss to the New York Jets at Paul Brown Stadium put a downcast ending on a season that included numerous breakthroughs on their way to the AFC North title. Lewis has led them to both of their playoff games since 1991 – they also went in 2005 as division champs and lost at home in the opening round.

The Buffalo Bills have asked Jets permission to speak to Schottenheimer

Add New York Jets offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the list of candidates in the Buffalo Bills’ search for a new head coach. The Bills have asked the Jets for permission to interview Schottenheimer, a person told The Associated Press on Monday. It’s unclear when the interview might take place, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the Bills have not revealed their list of candidates to replace Dick Jauron, who was fired in November.

LT dancing toward showdown with Jets; Rivers expects ‘a lot of good versus good

The San Diego Chargers watched video Monday of Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis and … LaDainian Tomlinson? Even as they checked out what the New York Jets do best, the red-hot Chargers had more than a few laughs watching a Nike commercial featuring Tomlinson dancing around in a white suit and rapping about his moves on the football field.

Seahawks giving Carroll ‘operational duties’ beyond X’s and O’s of coaching

New coach Pete Carroll will also have “operating duties” with the Seattle Seahawks. Those were the words of team chief executive officer Tod Leiweke on Monday night, after Carroll signed his contract to become Seattle’s eighth coach in 34 years.
