Jets fans are sighing in relief as young, defensive star David Harris will be a go for Saturday night’s re-match against the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card round of the play offs.
Harris suffered what is being described as a ‘mild’ ankle sprain in the Jets 37-0 drubbing of the Bengals in the regular season finale.
Harris has not participated in practice so far this week, but this is likely to be a precaution and no cause for concern.
However, should Harris be unable to play, the Jets will be severely hampered as his backup, Ryan Fowler, took a blow to the head when he took over LB duties for Harris in Sundays win. Fowler’s backup, Kenwin Cummings, is a former practice-squad player.
Not what I would call an awe-inspiring back up option.
One of the key elements in a stifling run defense, Harris racked up a team-high 142 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception during the regular season.
Harris’ skill set will definitely be needed for this upcoming rematch. With the return of Cedric Benson to the field, the Bengals will try to put a better running game together and the Jets need to do everything they can to prevent just that.
It is highly unlikely that Cincinnati will just lay down for us in this second game. The smart money will be on expecting to see more action out of Carson Palmer and the receiving corps.
Especially if Harris is on the field.
