Yesterday New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan went on record saying he will select a starting QB before the Jets play the Giants on Aug. 29.
The move is sure to help keep a fire lit underneath both rookie Mark Sanchez and veteran Kellen Clemens. Neither quarterbacks have looked overly impressive during the first 6 days of camp so far.
Kellen Clemens in particular has stuck out for me in reports coming out of camp for his numerous pass interceptions. To be fair, yesterday Clemens had his second consecutive turnover-free practice.
Sanchez, who completed 6 of 13 passes Wednesday, took more first-team snaps in the 9-on-7 drills. Clemens completed 6 of 10 passes and took all but one of the first-team reps in 11-on-11 drills.
While this has been loudly touted as a qb competition, Sanchez has taken limited reps with the first team. Until Sanchez starts to get more reps with the first squad there is little by way of a true apples to apples comparison yet.
Sanchez starts working out with the first team and we will start to get a much clearer picture of just how he is progressing. Especially in scrimmages against the first defensive unit.
