Linebacker Matt Wilhelm was recently cut by the San Diego Chargers just one week before the start of training camp. At only 28 years of age Wilhelm is in his prime and unemployed. It seems the Chargers had too many options at linebacker and decided to cut some weight.
With gaping holes in the depth chart, this is one prospect the New York Jets should be looking to snap up and quick. San Diego’s loss should be our gain.
With Calvin Pace out the first four games and Vernon Gholston the named interim starter during his suspension, it makes a whole lot of sense to go get a guy like Wilhelm to add to an already thin linebacker corp.
Wilhelm, at 6-4, 245 pounds, can play inside or outside and was an integral part of the Chargers defense. Unlike 38 year old Willie McGinest, who was recently rumored to be of interest to the Jets, Wilhelm is still on the right side of 30 with years left in the tank.
With little to no options, should current linebackers Bart Scott or David Harris go down with injury, Wilhelm could be the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel for this team. We all know that Bryan Thomas is not quite ready for prime-time.
A product of Ohio State, Wilhelm was selected in the fourth round by San Diego in the 2003 draft.
