Veteran Ravens WR Derrick Mason Is Calling It Quits.

After 12 seasons the 31st player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career yards receiving mark has reportedly hung his cleats up for the last time.

Derrick Mason told jocklife.com he intended to retire on Monday, but has not filed or informed his team as of yet.

Entering what would have been his final contract year, Mason was seeking a contract extention from Baltimore as recently as March. At that time he was reportedly looking to play at least 2 to 3 more seasons.

Mason, 35, was pivotal in helping Baltimore reach the AFC Championship Game last season. He led the Ravens in receptions (80) and receiving yards (1,037), starting all 16 games of the season. He had 12 catches for 190 yards and a touchdown in three playoff games last season.

Mason played eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans and four years with the Ravens.

Only days removed from the recent Steve McNair tragedy and subsequent funeral service, I can’t help but wonder if this played into his change of heart and ultimate desicion to move on.

Derrick Mason’s Career Stats
Receptions: 790
Yards: 10,061
Touchdowns: 52

Nothing against him but I never saw him as much of a force. He always just seemed like he was the best on his team by default. not like he ever had to compete against someone like say T.O. or Randy Moss. Just my two cents.
