Some 8 months after Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg, Roger Goodell and the NFL are preparing to review the incident.
The review will determine if Buress’s resulting legal issues violate the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Should the commissioner find his actions violated the policy, he could move to suspend Burress.
Of course, suspension by the NFL seems like the least of Burress’s troubles as he still faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon.
Burress would face up to 3 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
Burress, who caught the winning pass in the New York Giants’ Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in February 2008, was released by New York in April. He has not been signed by another team.
Burress is free to sign with any team, unfortunately his unresolved legal issues, coupled with a possible NFL suspension, has made teams reluctant to add the talented wide receiver.
I, for one, still see bad boy Plax here as an option for the Jets. This team should be getting pretty desperate to fill the role left wide open with the departure of Lavernues Coles. A field spreading wideout is still a major concern for this team…ask any fan, and while Burress comes with some obvious baggage, the truth of the matter is that so do all the other viable options that aren’t 40 years old or older.
Out of all the names thrown into the arena as suitable replacements (not counting all the retirees), only Burress has been to the big game and only Burress brings with him the level of big time experience our own receiving corps lack.
Further more, I find it almost ridiculous to see the level of hating being cast at Burress. Was he stupid for his actions? Of course he was…no one debates this, but tossing him out of the arena forever over it seems a little excessive.
I say that if we can all forgive and forget someone like Ray Lewis, whose legal issues make Burress’s seem like a simple jay walking violation in comparison, then surely we can bring Burress back to play.
Fans seem ready to throw him and his talents into the East river but I would remind you all that the NFL is and has been full of less than desirable characters for quite sometime now. An unfortunate fact that we have all managed to live with just fine up to now.
I suggest Jets fans get off the soapbox and starting thinking about what this season will look like without him. Â It’s not like the Giants filed chapter 11 over his having been there.
Somehow I don’t think their Super Bowl win tastes any less sweet either.
One thing is for sure, if we were to get Plaxico in a Jets uniform and manage to win a Super Bowl…fans will be sending him guns and ammo with notes reading…”Maybe you should try shooting the other leg for next year!”
