Good For You, Tony Gonzalez

I have to admit that I am happy for Tony Gonzalez. He finally got the trade he so desperately wanted and it’s to a team that must be jumping for joy to get him. He’s the rare professional athlete that not only performs at an extreme level, but seems to appreciate everything he has, continues to work hard, support other players and generally makes his team better overall. I believe he just helped the Atlanta Falcons become a much more dangerous team.

It’s been generally accepted that the Atlanta Falcons were aiming to nab a tight end in the draft tomorrow (most likely Brandon Pettigrew) to complete its offensive lineup. The trade for Gonzalez now allows them to freedom to focus on helping their defense. The Falcons offense now looks mighty daunting, at least on paper. Gonzalez joins a roster full of youthful talent in Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and Roddy White.

Their only real offensive weakness last season was at the tight end position and now they have arguably the league’s best, dare I say ever, to help them work their way back to the playoffs and maybe, just maybe, get Gonzalez the championship he’s always sought.

If nothing else, at least he’ll get back to winning.

He’s been the bright spot on the faltering Kansas City Chiefs for years and it’s about time he was allowed to get back on a winning franchise before his body finally gives out. At 33 years old, he’s certainly running out of time, even if he still looked damn impressive at the Pro Bowl.

I’m sure Kansas City and plenty of football fans are sad to see him leave the only team he’s ever played for in his twelve year career. That’s just unheard of in this age of free agency; to have that kind of talent stick to one team for so long.

It was time for Tony to move on, to give one last push at a championship. I know I’m not alone in wishing him the best, whether I root for the Falcons or not, he’s just the kind of player every fan cheers for.
